My family packed up a borrowed suburban and drove the long 14 hours from Utah to Port Orchard last week for a family reunion. I was in charge of the reunion, so I got to choose the location! (But thanks, guys for making that trip. I know driving that long wasn't easy or fun... hopefully being here was worth it! I sure had a wonderful time.)
We headed out to Kalaloch campground in Olympic National Park for a couple nights. It was a beautiful campground, right next to the beach. We all had so much fun playing on the soft sand. My kids especially loved it. We hiked the "Hall of Mosses" trail in the Hoh rainforest one day... and didn't even get rained on - in fact, it was super hot. I'd guess that was one of the hottest days in the rainforest this year! We also found a gorgeous trail in the Quillayute Indian Reservation that took us down to "Beach 2" (a sorry name for a breathtaking, secluded beach). We had an FHE lesson around a campfire on the beach too.
All of that was a lot of fun. I always love taking in the beautiful places God has created for us. And doing it with my whole family was wonderful. But I think my favorite part of their whole visit was on Sunday evening. We were at home, and had just finished a yummy Sunday dinner. My dear friend, Emily Hoisington, was with us, and she suggested that we sing around the piano. That's something we've always loved to do together. I'm so glad she suggested it. As I sat at the piano bench and played and sang, and heard all the beautiful voices of my parents and brothers and sisters blending together, I felt such sweet joy and happiness. That wonderful feeling of love and harmony brought tears to my eyes, and I found it difficult to sing for a bit. I don't cry often, so that's saying something. I have always said that my family members are my best friends, and that still holds true. I love them so much.
